TOO CASUAL

On its surface, there's really nothing wrong with this picture. (Of course, it's hard to take a bad picture of such a pretty subject, but that's a different story.) The problem with this as a headshot is very subtle - and that's why some photographers might miss it. Especially if they are primarily portrait photographers. In the business world, a bit of conservatism is expected - even required, in some cases. A neat updo, - for women of course - is automatically more professional. It conveys that you're ready to get down to business. You are ready to review that chart or case file or account. It conveys your acumen and your focus on the work at hand. Hair that's hanging long and loose with a business suit says, "whew, it's 5 o'clock."

We all like it when 5 o'clock rolls around, but that's not the impression you want to make on a potential client. And remember - that first impression forms almost instantly, and mostly subconsciously. If you wish, you can read about that process in more depth by visiting The Science Behind Your Headshot. In many cases, your headshot will be your first point of contact with someone who is searching for the services you offer. If it doesn’t create a connection and convey your competence and professionalism at a glance, it may be the only contact you ever make.

Not incidentally, long, loose hair is also eye-catching and, because of that, less suitable for a business headshot. Most of us enjoy and appreciate beauty, and there’s certainly nothing wrong with that. But, connection is all about the face: a welcoming smile and bright eyes that tell you someone is engaged in listening to you. If anything - in this case, lovely golden tresses - draws attention before the face, the connection is diminished. So, while this is a pretty picture, it's not an effective executive headshot.

Good photo, but too casual for business use
